Engaging Activities with Alzheimer’s Patients

In dealing with people with dementia, it is fundamental to engage in social gatherings to make them busy. Daily activities play a huge and significant role in precluding the progression of dementia. Activities help inhibit loneliness, despair and suicidal thoughts. Valuable activities which could arouse the mind to concentrate and think are to be considered. The activities will engage patients to social stimulation and interaction with other people. The nursing home staff initiates regular activities as well.

In dealing with people with dementia, it is fundamental to engage in social gatherings to make them busy.

Having meaningful activities with Alzheimer residents in our nursing home is a valuable task. We want our ill seniors to have enjoyable time while they are residing with us. Mostly, elders with dementia are ignorant of the time and day, therefore there should be proper calendar of activities to be prominently displayed on the wall. The calendar will make them be aware of the programs and activities given by our nursing home.

The following activities are constantly offered at Mabuhaii Nursing Home under palm trees for Alzheimer or dementia patients for their usual daily routine:

  • Physical exercises (Physiotherapy, Thai Chi, and Chi Gong).
  • Vast walks
  • Massages
  • Card games or board games
  • Karaoke singing
  • Surfing on the Internet
  • Watching Television
  • Listening to music
  • Making handicrafts

Daily activities play a huge and significant role in precluding the progression of dementia.

With these activities, it can arouse an impulse or urge for the Alzheimer’s patients to do something. They can be more active and lively. These activities can divert them from thinking that they are weak. Having a nice walk during their spare time could help frail seniors a lot to be dynamic as well as other endeavors, all in a comfortable and convenient place. Dementia elders are sometimes disoriented, wandering around and irritable. Thus, a lot of understanding and patience is needed with them. More often than not, nursing homes in Western countries have nurses who ignore these needs of ill elders as they cannot really handle the mood swings of these patients.

To be able to satisfy the need of a person with dementia, it requires a lot of time and patience. It also depends on promoting and maintaining the different abilities of the patients. Keeping them busy is the best way to treat them. This will not remind them that they are ill. Mabuhaii Nursing Home is determined to care for ill elders in the best way we can.
